What OBD2 tells you
The US EPA describes on-board diagnostics as a system that monitors emissions-related operation, stores diagnostic trouble codes and alerts the driver when it detects a problem. A compatible scan tool retrieves supported data from the vehicle. The precise functions depend on the vehicle and tool.

Compare the inputs, not a promise of certainty
Recording with a phone does not read the car’s ECU, retrieve OBD codes or measure oil pressure. Similarly, reading a code does not make a physical inspection unnecessary. Neither input should be presented as a complete vehicle health check.
| Question | OBD2 scanner | Sound analysis |
|---|---|---|
| What is the input? | Supported data from the vehicle diagnostic system. | An audio recording and the context you provide. |
| What do you need? | A compatible scan tool or adapter. | The app and access to your phone microphone. |
| What can you review? | Codes and supported readings. | An AI interpretation of the recorded sound. |
| What remains? | Interpreting the data and checking the cause. | Checking whether the suggested explanation matches the car. |
Which is useful for your situation?
- For a check-engine light, follow the owner manual and have the relevant diagnostic information checked. A sound recording cannot substitute for reading codes.
- For a noise that comes and goes, a recording and a description of the conditions can help communicate what you heard.
- For both a noise and a warning light, preserve both pieces of information. Do not discard one because the other appears reassuring.
Bring observations, not a parts order
Give the workshop the exact code if you have one, the vehicle details, the recording and the timing of the symptom. Ask what checks are needed before a repair is recommended.
For example, “The noise started this week, appears at warm idle, and this code was retrieved” gives more useful context than “The app says I need a new component.” Keep an AI suggestion clearly separate from a confirmed finding.
Use AI Mechanic for the audio part
AI Mechanic is available on Android for recording and reviewing an AI-generated sound analysis. No OBD adapter is needed for that recording workflow. If you want to understand what the report looks like before installing, open the example guide below.
