Describe what “cold start” means in your case
Tell the workshop whether the car was parked overnight, for a few hours or only briefly. Note the outdoor conditions if you know them, and distinguish the first start of the day from restarting a warm engine.
Describe whether the sound begins during cranking or after the engine starts running, and approximately how long it lasts. Do not repeatedly start the engine to reproduce a concerning rattle; write down what you already observed.
The vehicle and engine change the interpretation
A startup noise is a symptom category, not a component name. Manufacturer service information is often limited to a particular engine, production range and set of conditions.
For example, GM bulletin 10-06-01-007E covers startup lifter tick on specified AFM V8 engines after a period parked. Its scope cannot be generalized to every engine that rattles when cold. A workshop should check current service information for your exact vehicle.

A simple startup-noise log
| Record | Example of a useful note |
|---|---|
| Time parked | Overnight, approximately 10 hours. |
| Timing | Started immediately after the engine fired. |
| Duration | About three seconds, then no longer audible. |
| Other observations | Any warning lights or changed behavior; write “unknown” if unsure. |
| Recent changes | Date of last service and when the sound was first noticed. |
Capture an intermittent symptom without forcing it
If it is safe to operate the car and the noise occurs naturally, a recording from a safe stationary position may help. Keep your phone away from moving or hot parts. If you cannot capture the sound safely, the written log is still useful.
- Keep the unedited recording so the onset and ending remain audible.
- Do not add music or filters that could obscure the sound.
- Tell the workshop if the noise is becoming longer, louder or more frequent.
When the next step is an inspection
Arrange an inspection for a persistent new startup rattle. If a stop warning, severe knocking or other serious symptom accompanies it, stop safely and seek assistance. An AI sound report may help organize questions, but a reassuring result cannot rule out a problem that was not clearly captured.
